Movie Review | The Avengers

Last week my bro, me and two of our best buddies (Christopher and Matthew) went and saw The Avengers.
 Here was my first reaction....

"AHHHHHH!!!!!!!  This is soooo COOL!!!!!!!!"

Um, yes...although I refrained from actually screaming that while in the theater.   Actually, I probably could have and no one would have cared - we went to a midday showing on a weekday, and there were only two other people in the theater.
!!!
So we pretty much chuckled and snorted to our hearts content.

I'm going to try and get beyond my "This is soooo COOL" reaction and give you a rational review that actually makes sense.

So, The Avengers is what all of the other Marvel Superhero films - Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America, Thor, and The Incredible Hulk - have been leading up to.  It's all of the superheroes, plus a few more really cool characters, saving the world.

In a nutshell, Loki (Thor's brother) is trying to take over the world and the superheroes have to stop him.
Pretty basic plot there, except that they have to tie in all of the superheroes who have their own back stories.  Despite that, I never once felt lost or confused as to what was going on.

How about a character rundown for starters...

Steve Rogers aka Captain America
(Chris Evans)

Captain America is without a doubt my favorite character.  He's so my type of guy - clean-cut, selfless, courageous, a bit on the quiet side (I'll bet he's got an amazing sense of humor tucked in there), and from the 1940s...not to mention insanely good-looking.  Seriously, what's not to like??

In this film, Steve is just getting used to being in the present-day 21st century after being 'asleep' for 70 years when he crashed landed in the Arctic.  So, he's definitely feeling like a fish out of water.  A bit insecure and lonely, since everyone he knew and loved are dead now.
.....

Tony Stark aka Iron Man
(Robert Downey Jr.)

Tony would have to be my second favorite, mainly because he's got some really great lines and is hysterically funny.  He's the opposite of Steve Rogers - he loves and wants to be the center of attention.  A bit selfish, but still a loveable character.  There's quite a bit of tension between Tony and Steve at first.
.....

Thor
(Chris Hemsworth)

A good-looking guy with a HUGE hammer = very cool.  Since Loki is his brother, Thor goes through a lot of personal conflict here, feeling responsible for Loki.  He wants to stop him, but he's his brother and he loves him.
.....

Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow
(Scarlett Johansson)

We first meet Natasha (or Natalie) in Iron Man 2.  After that, we know she's cool.  Very cool.  She can take out a dozen tough guys in seconds...and I don't mean on a date.  In this film, we find out a bit more of her back story.  And, she's still cool.
.....

Dr. Bruce Banner aka The Hulk
(Mark Ruffalo)

I didn't watch The Incredible Hulk.  The guy is big, ugly and very green.  Not my style at all.  Besides, all you need to know is he was exposed to radiation (or something) and when he gets angry he turns into a big green thing that smashes.  In this film, Hulk had a lot of funny scenes, and got a lot of the laughs.  Even I'll admit he was funny.
.....

Loki
(Tom Hiddleston)

He wants power and respect.  He's tired of living in the shadow of his older brother, Thor.  He's out to rule the world.   And he fell off the bridge and into the wormhole at the end of Thor - that's enough to ruin anyone's day.  If I had to choose one word to describe Loki, it would be 'unstable'.  Very unstable.

.....
And then there's the rest of the S.H.I.E.L.D team, Nick Fury, Hawkeye, Agent Coulson...but I don't want this review to drag on forever.  Everyone else was super cool, too.
.....

As for the film itself...

The dialog was excellent.   Snappy comebacks, witty lines, truly funny (not crude) humor.  Plenty of great movie lines to use. *grin*

And my favorite...

You rock, Captain America!!

Soundtrack...soundtrack...okay, I honestly don't remember much about the soundtrack.  I remember it being about what you'd expect for a superhero action film - good, but not exactly memorable.  Not like I'm an expert or anything, that's just my take on it.

I think what makes the Marvel Superhero films so wonderful, is they don't expect you to take them seriously. The actors play it "real", but the films are funny and definitely a wee bit corny, but that just makes them even more awesome.  It's like reading a comic book, except there are no "bang", "zowie", and "boom" texts popping up;)  Lots of explosions for the guys, a wee bit of romance for the gals, and lots of cool action for everyone.

-Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action throughout, and a mild drug reference-

As far as the violence goes, it was pretty violent, but not very graphic.  I can't handle anything very graphic (sympathy pain - ouch), so the fact that I could go to the movies and watch this says a lot.
Also keep in mind that there is some language which I didn't approve of and a few scenes that, while not too bad, I would probably skip if I were watching at home.  Just check out the parents guide on IMDB - it's all there.

In conclusion...

"AHHHHHH!!!!!!!  This is soooo COOL!!!!!!!!"

Which means I loved it and would go and see it again if I could find someone to go with me;)

Happy trails, y'all!

  6. Thanks for the thorough review! It sounds like a movie my brothers would love.

Did you hear of FOR GREATER GLORY? It came out on June 1. My family saw it yesterday and cannot stop talking about it! :) It was about the Cristero War, when Christian men and women rose up against the tyrannical government that was taking away their religious freedom. It was AMAZINGLY beautiful and moving. Have a blessed day~

  8. Hay! Loved your review!! So well written and I loved your "This is soooo COOL" reaction. My thoughts exactly! I really loved the humour too. It's so refreshing to watch a movie where the humour is funny...and clean! Yesss!

  9. Cait - Welcome to my little corner of the internet, Cait! I'm so glad you dropped in and left a note:)

Yes! I loved how clean the humor was!! The humor in movies is usually so crude these days (and usually stupid funny, instead of truly witty), so The Avengers was a real treat!

I'm so glad you enjoyed my blog and my pinterest:) Come back anytime!

  10. One of the best hero movies EVER!!! Your review was awesome! Captain America is my favorite too, although I do like Hawkeye a lot too.:) I can't believe there were only two other people in the theater!?! That is crazy!!! Oh, so glad to find out our family isn't the only one that quotes movies like there's no tomorrow!;)

  11. Emily - I completely agree!! One of the best hero movies ever! Hawkeye was totally cool, too.
It's almost embarrassing how much my family quotes movies, except it's not because it's normal to us. *grin*

  12. I've been putting off a comment on this for a long time, thinking I had nothing to say... well, whatever. :-)
Captain America's my favourite, too, and the character seemed totally ridiculous to this Czech girl before she really encountered him - but it was done very nicely here, and Steve's such a likeable guy all in all.
I think my only complaint about the film is that there are not enough women - those that are in it are very nice or cool, so I kind of wish to see more heroines like that. :-)

  13. Hana-Marmota - I always enjoy reading your comments:)
lol. I thought Captain America seemed ridiculous too, until I saw the films. They did do a very nice job on Steve's character.
I love the heroines, too! Very cool, indeed! More heroines like them would be wonderful!
    Thanks for commenting! :)

  14. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH! This is so coooooooooooooooooooooool!

Yup, that about sums it up. Take your three favorite characters and mix them up a little, and you have mine (Thor, Cap, and Tony for me, thanks). Completely love this movie.
