Down the Barrel of a Gun

Last Saturday, Hank and I did some target shooting.  Which was fun and super awesome!  Plus, fun.  Did I mention it was awesome, too?  Yes.  I haven't done too much shooting, but I always enjoy it when I get the chance.

We had an assortment of .22's (rifle, revolver, and semi-automatic pistol), plus another revolver...and I can't remember for sure what it was.  Hank has only told me several times...was it a .45?  Anyway, I've shot my bro's .22 rifle before so that was pretty straight forward, and I have fired blanks from a .45 during a cowboy mounted shooting clinic.  Hank had to show me how to hold the pistol correctly, but that wasn't too hard and I had fun shooting those.  And yes, hitting those targets!  Especially with Hank getting so excited every time I hit something.  He hit the target a lot more than I did, but I wasn't too bad.  *smile*  In the end, the pistols look really cool and are fun, but I prefer the rifle.

We're shooting shotguns next, and apparently I will have to shoot and kill something by the end of the year...besides a pop can.  That's what Hank says, so I guess I'll have to.  Sounds like ground squirrels will be my first victims.  And here's where my real life friends die from shock.  Tasha, killing something?!  Well, I intend to give it a shot. *wink*

How about you, do you enjoy shooting?  Have you ever shot a gun?  I want to know!

p.s.
By the way, I would never kill something just for the sake of killing it.
With ground squirrels, there's a reason.

  1. Sa-weeet! ;D And adorable... and way too much fun. At this rate, you'll have gone hunting and actually harvested something before I have... which is kind of mind bending. You go girl! :D

  2. Please come kill our ground squirrels! We have tons. They have holes all over our pasture. I thought they were soooo cute when they showed up. When I told my parents we have a squirrel, my Dad said he better go shoot it. I thought he was crazy, and I told him he better leave the poor little thing alone. Boy am I sorry now! They are cute but evil! and wasteful of our chicken wheat. Don't feel bad about killing the little monsters.
I have shot bb and pellet guns. Do they even count? That's it for my assortment. When I was 5 my Brother gave me his bb gun. I got quite good at shooting it till one day he used it, and it blew out its innards. That was the end of my gun.

  4. Hi! Just stalking your blog - it's really cute! I've never gone shooting before, but it's been on my bucket list forever. I've done archery, which is pretty fun. :)

  5. An old farmer reminisced: I don't hunt anymore. Whenever a wild critter is killed, a little joy leaves the world.

I sincerely hope you will not kill even squirrels for fun.

  7. I'm with Kimberly--the only gun I've ever shot off is my dad's old BB rifle...which I had to learn left-handed because I'm left-eye dominant. :-P

You're braver than I am, though--real guns kinda creep me out, so I don't think I could actually handle one, let alone kill something with it....

    Happy squirrel-hunting, girlie! ;-)

    God bless,

  8. I've only been out shooting twice...and absolutely love it! However for the first 30+ minutes, I was looking through the wrong eye and thinking how in the world is it possible to get these sights in line ;)
Also terrible with the names and types.. but there was a .22 and an AR 15, shot gun (probably my favorite..BOOM!), some kind of revolver, and some handgun like the cops have haha. Did a small archery thing at the Big Horn Show this year and that might be more fun ;)

    ENJOY!

  9. I only shot something I suppose was a pellet gun years and years and years ago, but I would like to try again... A friend goes to a range sometimes, so I asked if I could come and try. Who knows when that will happen, but I'm in no rush.
I'm on the "don't kill" side, too, but I've come to the conclusion that it's better to know and then happily never have to use it, than the other way round... Also, I like westerns so an inherent interest in guns, and I suspect some inheritance of my father's fascination with machinery is at play somewhere. He's not into guns at all (unlike me, he's been through basic military training, and during communism, so he happily left that behind as soon as he could), but he got it almost immediately.

But I like archery, too. :-) I wanted to attend archery lessons with my sister this spring, but I have school at the time, so no luck there. But whenever I have a chance to try, I try.

  10. Kellie - You never know! ;D It boggles my mind, that's for sure... *grin*

Kimberly - I'm so thankful that they've never shown up in our pastures! A few gophers, but the cats keep them under control.
Hmm, well I think BB and pellet guns count. ;)

    Bethany - Definitely fun!

Chelsea - Hello there! I'm so glad you stopped by and said hi! :)
Archery looks like so much fun!!

Will - I definitely understand where you're coming from. However, I must respectfully disagree. If the squirrels are allowed to continue to multiply without any check that's not healthy for anyone. They cause damage to pastures, leaving holes which endanger livestock. God gave us dominion over the animals, and we're being good stewards of that responsibility by keeping everything in balance.
I would never just kill for the sake of killing something. In this case, there is a reason.

Maria - Me, too!! I'm looking forward to shooting some bigger guns. I know shotguns are next on the list and who knows what after that! :D

Tom - BB guns are fun. :)
I do think it's important to know how to handle guns. You never know when you might have to use one.
    Thank you! :D

Rachel - I'm really going to have to try archery someday. It looks like so much fun!

Hana-Marmota - And now you say you enjoy archery, too! I really must try it!! :)
