Miscellany

After several days of silence, we now have our internet back.  Hooray!!  Due to the wonderful, snowy weather we've been having lately, our internet was knocked-out for a bit.  In all honesty, it was rather pleasant not having access to the internet for a few days.  It definitely made the day less busy.  More time for reading, crocheting, spending time with my mom and watching movies.

Ah, yes - movies.   I have official broken my record for movies checked out from the library in one day.
24
I repeat, 24.  Before you look completely shocked, it was not my intention to take home twenty four movies.  No, that was the library's idea.  All of my requests (some of which I have been waiting for for months) all decided to come in on the same day.  Thank you, library dear, I love you too. *sarcasm*
I felt like sinking through the floor.  My brother said it was embarrassing, walking out of the library with me toting two bags full of DVDs.  I it makes it look better, I also took home five more books.

One of those books was titled Teach Yourself Visually: Knitting.  This book finally unlocked the mysteries of knitting for me.  I can now knit.
*applause*
And I completely recommend that book.  Very clear, easy to understand instructions and pictures.
Now to invest in a few more knitting needles and I'll be off and running.  Who knows, you may be seeing some knitted items in the shop soon.

About a month ago I received a chain letter in the mail.  The old-fashioned kind with a stamp on it.  It was from one of my new church friends, and it contained two, purple quilt squares.  The idea is for me to pass on copies of the letter with quilt squares of my own to four people and eventually I'll have enough squares to make a Purple Charm Quilt.  How fun is that?!  The only problem is, I've run short on people to send them to.
So, I had an idea - would any of you ladies be interested in receiving and passing on this quilt chain letter?  If so, please send me an email here:

And our power just went out...but we have a HUGE generator which kicked in after 30 seconds.  Thank goodness for that!

Our church's Christmas Program last Sunday was excellent.  They took the story of the census, Mary and Joseph and turned it into a Channel 7 News Report.  Very, very well done.  Especially the hilarious inn keeper who kept popping out of his "inn" and saying "Helllloooo".  His inn was a small cubicle about 5'x2'.  Very roomy.  My favorite was the "commercial".  The shepherds came up on stage and were beating their socks on rocks to clean them, and then a guy comes on and sings a catchy jingle about Star Beam, the #1 detergent for cleaning socks!  It was awesome.   I think the best part was seeing all of these adults and kids from our church up on stage in costume.  So much fun, especially the pastor's cameo as a wise man.  My bro and I sat with a friend and whispered and chuckled through the whole thing. ;)

Who all has seen The Hobbit already?   I keep telling myself, "You waited a whole year, you can wait a few days more...", but I cannot wait!!  Hopefully this Saturday we'll be able to go.

And that's all I have time for now.  I've got to get outside and do some snow removal from the top of the chicken coop ASAP before it collapses.

Have a wonderful day and Merry Christmas!

  1. LOLLLLLL about the videos! My library ALWAYS does this and it's a pain...I mean, then you run out of time to see them all and then they're ALL due at the same time....sighhhhh. :D

And I saw it yesterday! :) More on my blog...

  2. Yay for learning to knit! I can do both (knit and crochet) but for me, crocheting is faster and I enjoy it more. However, I do have a half-finished sweater I really need to finish knitting once the Christmas rush is over.

I loved the program, too! I thought the little children with their animal hats were so sweet. Especially the one little "cow" who keep hopping up and down the steps in her frilly Christmas dress! And it's no wonder there was no room in the inn, as dinky as it was!

  3. That's a lot of DVD's! Our library has a limit of 10 checked out DVD's at one time. All my books and movies like to come in at the same time as well. :P

  4. were the 24 dvds all yours or were they for other family members as well? ;D

I saw the Hobbit!! It was fantastic. Be warned, you'll probably fangirl a lot. I know I did. I squealed and whacked my friend when Richard Armitage first came on screen.

  5. That's a LOT of movies! ;-) If it makes you feel any better, there have been times when I've walked out of the library with an armful of oversized books. :-P

Well, we *were* going to see TH tomorrow afternoon...but now it's snowing. So we may have to postpone our trip to Middle-earth till after New Year. :-(

Congrats on learning to knit! *Confetti* Once you feel like you've gotten the hang of it, I recommend checking out Barbara G. Walker's A Treasury of Knitting (and a Second, and a Third..). Pages and pages of fabulous knitting patterns to inspire you--from delicate lace to chunky cables. :-D

    Merry Christmas, dearie!

  6. I can just imagine you with two sacks full of movies!! Maybe you set a Guiness Record for watching so many movies in such a short time! Knitting is fun and I am working to increase my skills to do more difficult projects. You are so skilled at crocheting that I imagine you won't have any problem getting the hang of working with various size needles. Ahhh, all of the cool yarns in those great yarn stores! That is what inspires me to keep working on new projects. Currently, my friend Kelli introduced me to this yarn that automatically does a fairisle pattern all by itself!! I have this simple fingerless glove pattern that I am using and finished one glove. Love it!! Oh it is so fun to knit and see how the colors all work out. Good luck and I look forward to what you come up with for your shop.

  7. Hey - at least 24 DVDs came during the winter! If it were in the summer, you wouldn't stand a chance;) As it is.. I just bet you'll be able to smoke through them all. Hehe...
I wish we could hibernate for a week and do nothing but drink hot chocolate, eat soup and bread, and watch them.

  8. I went and saw the Hobbit. It was really good. There were a few changes and if you're a real Tolkin fan, they might bug you a little. But it was still really good. Bilbo was fantastic!
24 DVD's... That's fun! And with 24 DVD's you still found time to write a blog post. Impressive. lol.
    God Bless.

  9. We've been watching tons of Christmas movies lately and a lot of DW. Our new Whovian sister has seen almost the entire 1st season in a week!

We saw The Hobbit. It.Was.FANTASTIC. I loved everything about it. It was very To The Book and there were a good many scenes taken directly from certain chapters. CANNOT WAIT FOR YOU TO SEE IT!

    God Bless

  10. Oh dear! I've done the same thing, except with books (they had to get a box once....and oh, my face was ablaze!), since our library limits how many movies we can check out at a time (4 DVDs and 4 VHS).

I haven't seen The Hobbit yet....I cannot wait to!

  12. Good job on the knitting! I found Youtube videos particularly helpful when teaching myself to knit and crochet. Also Ravelry is a good website with lots of free patterns and helpful people. I've been away so haven't watched the Hobbit yet but I re-read the book and am itching to go see it!!
