Classic Movie May // Favorite Actors

I'm linking up to...

If you know me at all, then you know I adore classic films and the stars of the silver screen!  Given the chance I could talk for hours about my favorite films, actors, and actresses.  Sometimes, I do. *grin*

: :

Steve McQueen | Respectful silence, please...the King of Cool is about to come on screen.  That's me every time I watch a Steve McQueen film.  Of all the actors I've seen, he's the one that I completely fell in love with.  I thought he was the greatest thing I'd ever seen, and I still do to a certain extent...I've just grown up a bit since then, and gotten over my movie star crush. *smile*  I love his style of acting, the manly characters he played, and his rugged good looks.  So yes, pretty much everything about him.  During his acting career, he proved he could play any role, though he was very much type-cast.  If you're looking for a good biography to read about him, then I highly recommend Steve McQueen: The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon by Marshall Terrill.  Very good read.  Steve's life was certainly not perfect, but he achieved the ultimate victory by accepting Christ towards the end of his life.
My favorite of his films (that I've seen) are The Blob, The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery, Never So Few (some content and language), The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, and of course the TV series Wanted: Dead or Alive.

: :

Jimmy Stewart | Who doesn't love Jimmy?  He's the tall, good-looking, generous kind of guy that we'd all like to know!  I love the way his eyes reflect his thoughts so you can see what he's thinking.  His eyes and face do much of his acting for him.  Serious or comedy, he could do it all.  And the westerns he made?  If anyone was meant to play a rugged cowboy, it was Jimmy.  My favorites of his films (that I've seen) are Made For Each Other, After the Thin Man, The Shop Around the Corner, Destry Rides Again, You Can't Take It With You, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It's a Wonderful Life, Call Northside 777, The Stratton Story, Winchester '73, Broken Arrow, Harvey, Bend of the River, The Naked Spur, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo, The Spirit of St. Louis, Night Passage, Mr. Hobbes Takes a Vacation, and The Rare Breed.

: :

Frank Sinatra | There never has been and never will be another Frankie.  I adore him.  How could anyone resist those big, blue eyes?  Not only did he have a simply divine voice, but he could really act, too.  The way he sang as if he really meant every word he was singing was amazing.  No wonder I love listening to him sing love songs. *wink* My favorite of his films (that I've seen) are On the Town, Young at Heart, Suddenly, Guys and Dolls, The Tender Trap, High Society, Never So Few (with Steve McQueen! too much awesome for one film!), A Hole in the Head, and Von Ryan's Express (some content and language).

: :

Errol Flynn | Best known for his swashbuckling, adventure roles, Errol is quite possibly the most handsome actor ever, at least in my humble opinion.  He was perfection itself as a sword wielding hero.  His comedic timing was perfect too, and it's a shame he didn't star in more comedies.  The films I enjoy most are those he made with Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood being my all time favorite film in the history of ever.   Those two made a brilliant screen couple, and made eight films together.  My favorite of his films (that I've seen) are Captain Blood, The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Prince and the Pauper, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Four's A Crowd, The Dawn Patrol, Dodge City, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, The See Hawk, Santa Fe Trail, and The Died with Their Boots On.

: :

Fred Astaire | I affectionately refer to Fred as "good ol' light bulb head". *smile* He wasn't dashingly handsome, but you forgot all about that as soon as he started singing and dancing his way into your heart.  He was the perfect, charming gentleman, and his dancing was incomparable.  Especially delightful are the ten films he made with Ginger Rogers.  Those two could really dance!  I just wish I could have seen Fred and his sister Adele dancing together.  From everything I've read, she was even more talented than he was!
I highly recommend his autobiography Steps in Time.  A thoroughly delightful, well written, humorous read.  My favorite of his films (that I've seen) are Roberta, Top Hat, Follow the Fleet, Swing Time, Shall We Dance, Carefree, The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle, Holiday Inn, Easter Parade, The Barkleys of Broadway, Three Little Words, Royal Wedding, The Band Wagon, Daddy Long Legs, Funny Face, and On the Beach (some content and language).

: :

I really have way too many favorite actors to write a little bit on each of them, so here are a few honorable mentions: Ronald Reagan, Humphrey Bogart, Ronald Coleman, Dean Jones, Roy Rogers, Charlton Heston, Cary Grant, Anthony Perkins, and Paul Newman.

: :

Question: Who are some of your favorite silver screen actors?  I want to know!

March 9, 2013

Saturday Matinee | no. 5

: :

Get Smart | It's Control versus Kaos in this show from the 60s.  Tag along with Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 as they solve crimes and prevent Kaos.  Whether by design or accident (more often than not), the fight for niceness instead of evil always prevails.
This is 60s TV at it's finest.  Hilarious dialog, great catch phrases, and humorous spoofs, not to mention some great comedic acting!  I rarely think about it, but Don Adams and Barbara Feldon are quite possibly my favorite screen couple ever.  Really, the chemistry between those two at Max and 99 is fantastic.  And who can resist a great spy show?  I love how classy 99 is - what a style icon!
My mom grew up watching Get Smart, and has passed on her love for this show to my brother and me.  I find it hard to believe, but it's even funnier now that I'm an adult!  I get a lot more of the jokes, and the ones I did get as a child are twice as funny now.  There are a few episodes with content that my mom didn't let as watch as children.  Watching it now, it's completely harmless.  I guess I'd give this show an overall PG rating.  It's well worth watching!

: :

And that's all I have time for today...which is ood, I mean odd considering I haven't really left the house this week.  Okay, so I'm lazy. ;)  Anyone want reviews for Bride Wars and Fantastic 4 next week?

Have a blessed Sunday, everyone!

Silver Screen Blog Party { I Answer the Questions}

Day by Day

t h e  q u e s t i o n s

{1}
It seems to be standard procedure for blog party questionnaires to begin by asking you to introduce yourself to the rest of the party goers. Far be it from me to be remiss in my duty, therefore, do tell us a bit about yourself, in as many or few words as you wish.
Well, I'm the hostess of this here blog party, and let me say first that I've enjoyed reading everyone's answers very, very much!
I love living in Idaho, raising sheep, spending time with my family and friends, reading, watching classic films, and studying God's Word.  You can find out more about me on my About Me page.

{2}
What are a few of your favorite classic films?
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Ben-hur
The Great Escape
The Magnificent Seven
Sabrina
That Darn Cat!
The Parent Trap
Funny Face
Guys and Dolls
Rebecca
Casablanca
Charade
...to name a few;)
You can find my other top favorite films on my Bookshelf page.

{3}
Out of those films, who are your favorite characters (not actor, character)?
Robin Hood
Esther (Ben-hur)
Captain Hilts (The Great Escape)
Vin and Brit (Mag 7)
Linus and David Larrabee (Sabrina)
Zeke Kelso & Canoe (The Darn Cat)
Jo Stockton & Dick Avery (Funny Face)
Nathan Detriot (Guys and Dolls)
Mrs. de Winter (Rebecca)
Rick Blain and Victor Lazlo (Casablanca)
Reggie (Charade)

{4}
Share one of your favorite movie lines...
Oh goodness! Did I really say one favorite line?!
All of the lines in the movie line guessing game are my favorites, but I'll got with one I didn't include...

"Why, you speak treason!"
"Fluently."
Maid Marian and Robin Hood, The Adventures of Robin Hood

{5}
What is your opinion on remaking classic films?
As a general rule, I can't stand it when they (whoever "they" are;) remake a classic.  These films are classics for a reason.  There are a few exceptions to this rule.  You've Got Mail and In The Good Old Summertime are both remakes of The Shop Around the Corner, and I love them all for their own unique qualities.

{6}
How about colorizing black and white films?
Absolutely, definitely, decidedly against colorizing black and white films!  They're works of art, created to be viewed at their best in black and white and should not be tampered with.  That being said, there are two colorized films which I grew up watching that I continue to watch in color even when presented with the option to view in the original black and white.  Those two special films would be the original The Shaggy Dog and the original The Absent-Minded Professor.

{7}
Name a few of your favorite silver screen actresses.
Olivia de Havilland
Audrey Hepburn
Jean Arthur
Hayley Mills
to name a few.

{8}
Now a few of your favorite actors.
Steve McQueen
Jimmy Stewart
Errol Flynn
Ronald Coleman
to name a few.

{9}
Why are they your favorites?
Firstly, I love all of them because they are excellent actors and actresses.
Specifically...
I love Olivia's sweetness, the way she brings innocence to a role without making it sappy.
Audrey Hepburn is elegant, classy and a lady.  She's just marvelous in every way.
Jean Arthur's cute little voice makes me smile.
And Hayley Mills...well, she's cute and spunky and makes my day better.

Steve...do you want the short or long version of why I love Steve McQueen?!  As an actor, he's adorable, cute, cool and tough all at the same time.  He can act without saying a word.  As a man, he rose above his less than perfect beginning (an alcoholic mother and an abusive step-father) to become one of the greatest stars of all time.  No, he was not perfect and he had many failings, but he achieved the greatest victory man can when he gave his life to the Lord 3 years before he died.  He completely turned his life around after that.  Now there's a man.
Jimmy Stewart, you are wonderful in every way:)
I like Errol Flynn because he is outrageously good-looking and has a gorgeous accent.
Ronald Coleman is the perfect gentleman and he has an awesome British accent which I absolutely adore listening to.

{10}
Do you enjoy westerns? Why or why not?
Yes, yes, yes! I LOVE westerns!!
I love the hard riding cowboys, the daring feats of marksmanship, and the romance.
And if we're talking Roy Rogers, the songs:)

{11}
Are you a purist when it comes to adapting a book you love to the screen?
Sort of.  There are some things which the filmmakers must get right in order for me to enjoy the film, but I totally understand that some things just don't adapt well to the screen so I can forgive most changes they make.  What annoys me the most is when they change a character's character.  For example, Peter and Edmund Pevensie from Narnia.  They turned Peter the Magnificent into Peter the Jerk in Prince Caspian, and did almost the same thing to Ed in Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  I've read those book so many times and they are very near and dear to my heart, so it really irritated me.  Same thing with Faramir in The Two Towers.  Ugh.  However, I still enjoy all of those films, cause they're awesome=)

{12}
Are there any film adaptations that you enjoyed more than the original book?
Probably War & Peace (1956).  I've started to read War and Peace twice, and just couldn't make it through.  I wanted to love it very much, especially since one of the characters is named Natasha;)  I love the film though!  And it doesn't hurt that Natasha is played by Audrey Hepburn=)

{13}
There are a lot of wonderful classic TV shows, but which one is your favorite?
Wanted: Dead or Alive (well, it stars Steve McQueen;)
Also, Leave it to Beaver.
Oh, and Mission: Impossible.
And...stopping.
;)

{14}
After watching a musical, do you hum and singing snatches of the songs as you go about your day?
Every time!  I don't always remember all of the words, but I sing them anyway;)

{15}
Assuming the answer to the above is "yes", which song, without fail, get's stuck in your head?
It's A Grand Night For Singing (State Fair 1945)
Good Mornin' (Singin' in the Rain)

{16)
What's the corniest film you've ever seen?
Mr. Imperium
Lame, lame, lame.
Don't waste your time.

.....

Happy Trails, y'all!

Going Through the Era's {Fun Monday} - 1950's

I'm linking up to Bramblewood Fashion's Going Through the Era's event!

This week {March 18th-24th} is the 1950s.
Today's theme is...Fun Monday!
{share games, TV shows, music, radio shows and books from the era}

One of my newly discovered favorite singers is
Pat Boone.
I just love his voice and his songs are so fun!

During the 50s he was second biggest charting artist with only Elvis Presley coming in ahead of him.
He was known for his clean-cut, boyish image and as a Christian refused movie roles and songs that he felt might compromise his standards.

These two songs are my favorites...
Ain't That A Shame and A Wonderful Time Up There.

 Someone I've loved listening to ever since I first saw her in White Christmas, is
Rosemary Clooney.
When I was just a kid, my mom would put Mambo Italiano on, and we'd dance around the room and sing to it.  My mom and her sisters used to do the same when they were kids:)

.....

Some of my absolute FAVORITE TV shows are from this era...

Wanted: Dead or Alive
{1958-61}
Starring the amazingly wonderful and totally adorable King of Cool: Steve McQueen!
Um, in case you couldn't tell...I'm a McQueen fan;D

Leave it to Beaver
 {1957-63}
Meet the Cleaver family!  Ward and June Cleaver, and their sons Wally and Theodore, who prefers to be called "Beaver".   My whole family loves this show.  Beaver (played by Jerry Mathers) is quite possibly the cutest little boy ever.    I absolutely adore June Cleaver's wardrobe - she wears the cutest clothes:)

And of course there's The Andy Griffith Show, Ozzie and Harriet, Dennis the Menace, What's My Line and The Roy Rogers Show...I love 50s TV shows:)

.....

And that's all for today.
Happy Trails, y'all!

Miscellany

Today is a simply gorgeous day!  Blue skies and sun! =D

Have you heard the news?  My dearest Kellie is hosting...

Yesterday, I discovered a marvelous blog - a blog devoted entirely to The Scarlet Pimpernel!  =D

The Day Dream

Sink me!

My latest obsession is the 60s TV series Mission: Impossible.
It. is. awesome. period.

The Impossible Missions Force team from seasons 2 and 3....
Cinnamon Carter, Rollin Hand, Willie Armitage, Barney Collier and Jim Phelps.

Rollin, the Man of a Million Faces, is completely awesome.

Even my incredibly picky friend Ani (Matthew), agrees with me on that. ;)

Fun Fact: Martin Landau (Rollin) and Barbara Bain (Cinnamon) were married.  It's always fun to see a husband and wife together in film. :)

Ok, enough MI...for now;)

My actor for this week is Charlton Heston.
I requested as many of his films as possible from the library.
I'm quite steeped at this point.
Recommended flicks:
Ben-Hur
The Ten Commandments
El Cid
The Big Country
Charlton Heston did much of his own driving in the chariot race.  Very cool=)

One that I haven't watched yet is The Far Horizons.  It's the story of the Lewis and Clark Corp of Discovery.  Highly fictionalized, I imagine, and with a rather interesting cast including Fred McMurray, Donna Reed and Charlton Heston.  I'll let you know how that goes. :)

I think it's time I got outside and enjoyed the delicious weather.
Have a wonderful, blessed day everyone!
