I feel so, so blessed to have these lovely vintage pictures of my family to look through and enjoy.

~ 1930-1939 ~

These pictures are of my great grandparents on my mom's mom's side of the family...

...our Austrian side.

Anton "Tony" Kern was born in Ober-rakitsh, Austria and left home when he was 19 to work. A few years after that (we don't know how old he was then), he came on a ship to America. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWI, but didn't go overseas. Instead, he drove a motorcycle with a sidecar and chauffeured officers around. He couldn't speak English very well.

Ann Hutain grew up in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She met Tony through an ad in a German newspaper. He had placed the ad saying that he wanted a pen pal. Ann's mother showed her the ad and encouraged her to write to him. Annie didn't want to. In fact, what Annie did want, was to become a nun. But her mother insisted, so Annie wrote to Tony. They corresponded for quite a while, and when Tony got leave he came for a visit.
They were married on June 2, 1920.
Ann was 18-years-old and Tony was 34-years-old.

Isn't that just the sweetest story? I'm so glad that Ann didn't become a nun;)

{side note: I once had someone who'd been to Austria tell me that I look Austrian. who'd have thunk?}

I love listening to old radio shows, especially Lux Radio Theater - the advertisements for Lux soap are just golden.

"9 out of 10 Screen Stars use Lux Toilet Soap!"

And who wouldn't want to be as lovely as a Hollywood star?!

Not only are the shows fun to listen to and the acting is superb (of course!), it's an excellent reminder to wash your face. I can't count the number of times I've snuggled into bed while listening to Lux, only to realize I forgot to wash my face. 1.5 seconds later I'm out of bed and all but running to the bathroom to wash it.

True story.

I fell in love with this short video when I first saw it on my special edition copy of The Adventures of Robin Hood {1938}.
Simply stellar, especially their rendition of Loch Lomond. <3
And the man playing the drums seriously cracks me up...

As far as literature goes...
J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Hobbit, or There and Back Again was published in 1937.

I haven't had much to say lately, have I? I guess that's because there just isn't much going on right now.

Winter is a slow time of year around here. A time for resting...in between shoveling snow, feeding animals and hauling buckets of water from the creek. ;)

It's a time for curling up by the fire and reading a good book. I've been reading lots of Nancy Drew and Beverly Lewis this year, a rather odd combination to be sure. I also read the play The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. I LOVED it! So, so funny!! And I'm working my way through our A encyclopedia. Someday, I'll have read them all from A-Z. At least that's the idea;)

I had a marvelous sleepover with Kellie in her wall tent the other day in honor of her 20th birthday. We ate chocolate, drank chocolate mint tea, watched an awesome movie, laughed, giggled and squealed. We may or may not have screamed a few times from sheer delight. The little hoodlums (aka Kellie's younger sisters) were busy elsewhere, so we had the entire evening to ourselves. =) The next day was spent driving up to Sandpoint for some window shopping and singing along to crazy songs in the car. I might have some pics to share at a later date, but I'm not sure how many we actually got - having too much fun. :)

Speaking of Kellie...if you haven't already, then you really should go join in the fun over at her blog.

I've been working on sewing a dress from the vintage pattern I bought. I decided to make my first effort red gingham, like the one on the pattern envelope. It's a pretty simple pattern, but I'm having some difficulty getting it to fit me correctly - thank goodness for Betty, my dress form! I don't know what I'd do without her. :)

I'm planning a surprise for you all next month...but I can't tell you what it is. I'll give you a hint though - it has to do with my Etsy shop's one year anniversary, my birthday and one of my hobbies.
Ok, so that was three hints.

Hey there! I'm Natasha Marie.
If this is your first visit to this crazy world of farm life, crocheting, movie watching and randomness that I call my blog - and my life - then welcome!
I live with my family in the beautiful mountains of North Idaho, about 80 miles from the Canadian border.
In general, I'm a very quiet, shy person, but I love to laugh and be crazy. :)

I take pleasure in many things including, but not limited to, horses, raising sheep, crocheting, sewing, reading, watching classic films, living in the country, dancing, singing, playing the piano, drinking hot chocolate and enjoying the beauty of God's creation.

As my mother has had Lyme disease for the past 2 years and is confined to a wheelchair at present, I'm the one who takes care of the house and family by cooking, cleaning and grocery shopping. My wonderful brother helps with the cooking - he's an excellent cook. I also take care of my small flock of sheep, the horses and the llamas on a our little "farm". It's not always easy but the Lord has been teaching me and helping me to grow in so many ways, for which I am thankful.

What, to you, forms the essence of a true heroine?

A true heroine puts the needs of others ahead of her own. She is gentle and kind, always up for adventure, and always a lady no matter what the circumstances.

The Scarlet Pimpernel (the entire series really, especially El Dorado), The Scottish Chiefs, Captain Blood, Little Women and Pearl Maiden.

Out of those five books who is your favorite main character and why?
Oh dear, oh dear...favorite main character. Well, I picked Sir Percy last year, but this year I'm going to go with Miriam from Pearl Maiden. She doesn't compromise her faith, even though it means giving up the man she loves.

Out of those five books who is your favorite secondary character and why?
Hmm...I really don't know. :)

If you were to plan out your dream vacation, where would you travel to - and what would you plan to do there? Scotland and Austria - I want to do and see everything in Scotland, including a horseback ride cross country over the highlands and on the beach (you really can do that!), and, while I was across the pond, I'd visit my relatives in Austria:)

What is your favorite time period and culture to read about?
The early American frontier - everything was so new and exciting!

That's one of the reasons I enjoy James Fenimore Cooper and Zane Grey's books so much.

You have been invited to perform at the local charity concert. Singing, comedy, recitation - what is your act comprised of?
Singing, maybe with Kellie or the North Idaho Hat Band (my bro's band).

If you were to attend a party where each guest was to portray a heroine of literature, who would you select to represent?
Probably Margaret Hale or Jo March. Or Esther from Ben-Hur.

Describe your ideal dwelling place.

My house of dreams is...a country victorian style house in the country, surrounded by trees, with a pond and a stream gurgling nearby. The house will be white with lilac shutters and trim, with a wrap around porch that goes all the way around the house, a bay window with a window seat, a window seat at the end of the upstairs hallway concealed from view by curtains with a "shh, I'm reading" sign, a library with shelves from floor to ceiling with those neat little rolling ladders to reach the topmost books, a kitchen with a cooking island and a big sink, an attic crammed full of old furniture and trunks full of delightful things from days gone by, lace curtains on all the windows, a laundry chute, a music room with a baby grand piano, wood flooring throughout the whole house, and a room set aside as the school room. Also, no ideal dwelling place of mine would be complete without a barn, so a large barn with plenty of room for my horses, sheep and other livestock, a cozy place for me to sleep during lambing season, and a covered walkway from the barn to the house so I don't have to shovel a path through the snow. And this ideal dwelling place will be located in the ideal, beautiful state of Idaho! There - you asked for it;)

Heavens, yes! but I can't think of an example at the moment. ;)

In your opinion, the most dastardly villain of all literature is...
Lady Mar from The Scottish Chiefs - a completely odious, traitorous woman, to be sure! I also have to say Mr. Wickham from Pride & Prejudice because he's so deceptively pleasant at first glance.

Three favorite Non-fiction books?
God's Word (of course:), our set of World Book Encyclopedias, and Adam's Synchronological Chart of History.

Your duties met for the day, how would you choose to spend a carefree summer afternoon?
Sitting on the glider swing reading, riding my horse, taking a nap on the glider swing (I love our glider:), exploring our forest, and drinking lemonade.

Create a verbal sketch of your dream hat - in such a way as will best portray your true character.
A crocheted slouchy hat/beret/tam or a newsie.
And a floppy straw hat for the summer.

{three} what would you describe as the most lovely place to live in 1700's England? a cottage surrounded by woods or a mansion perhaps, to the same resemblance as Pemberley in Miss Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

I'm completely in love with the cottage by the sea in the 2008 adaptation of Sense & Sensibility. The crashing waves, the rolling hills, the loneliness - I could live there.

I would like more trees, though. Other than that, it's perfect.

I'm quite sure that Miss Lizzy Bennet and I would get along splendidly. I would also love to take tea with Marguerite Blakeney, Amy Dorrit or Molly Gibson. Maybe we could all have tea together! :)

I very much enjoy both, but caffeine does really, really weird things to me so I don't drink coffee anymore. :(

The blue skies were calling my name.

It was simply too beautiful to stay indoors yesterday, so I went for a walk...

I walked around the pond...

Through the orchard to the horse pasture...

I came around the corner of the horse barn, and found my Bobby boy sunning himself...

And stopped to take some pictures of him...

Then I walked down the lower logging trail past the horse pasture...

...past the small pond...

...past the sheep pasture...

...until I got to the sheep pen...

I visited with my girls for a bit...

Charlton Heston did much of his own driving in the chariot race. Very cool=)

One that I haven't watched yet is The Far Horizons. It's the story of the Lewis and Clark Corp of Discovery. Highly fictionalized, I imagine, and with a rather interesting cast including Fred McMurray, Donna Reed and Charlton Heston. I'll let you know how that goes. :)

I decided it was about time to share a few crochet patterns that I've created with y'all.

This first one is a deceptively simple crochet project, but the end result is a wonderfully feminine and stylish...

As seen in my Etsy shop.

Pattern...

Skill level: beginner/easy - must know how to chain and double crochet

Yarn: approximately 1/2 a skein of Red Heart Super Saver

Hook size: K

Stitch abbreviations: ch (chain), dc (double crochet)

Row 1: ch 123
Row 2: turn and dc in each ch across.
ch 3 and turn.
Row 4: 2 dc in each dc of previous row (increase).
ch 3 and turn.
Row 5: repeat previous increase row.
Tie off and weave in ends.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And viola! A ruffle scarf!

This pattern works up very quickly - I can make three a day...as long as my wrists hold out, that is. ;)

The question is, is it "grey" or "gray"? I've always wondered. Finally, I looked it up on Wikipedia, and what-do-ya-know? Both are correct. I prefer "grey", though. Always have.

I'm lovin' this song from the film Fireproof right now...the lyrics speak to my heart.

The 1 1/2 or more feet of snow we got last week is now melting again. Hello, ice! Hello, slush! I missed you...not.

Ok, so I don't know anything about her and I haven't really liked any of the movies that I've seen her in, but I think Anne Hathaway is absolutely gorgeous.

But you know something? My best friend is even more beautiful...

Kellie is beautiful clear through - both inside and outside.
I've said this many, many times, dear, but I so treasure our friendship.
You are so, so special to me and I love you more than I can say.

Movie Review: The Great Escape

All looks as it should, with the prisoners of war wandering quietly about the compound at Stalag Luft III - a special prisoner of war camp built specifically to keep the best POW airmen escape artists from doing just that.

Yes, all is quiet...unless you were to go 30 feet under huts 123, 122 and 104. Those are the huts which house Tom, Dick and Harry.

Who are Tom, Dick and Harry?

Perhaps you should ask what are Tom, Dick and Harry.

Why, they're tunnels, old boy!

And they're progressing rather nicely right now, all aimed towards the woods on the other side of the camp fence.

Aimed for escape and freedom.

The true story of the 1944 mass escape from the German prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III, based on the book by Paul Brickhill, a prisoner in the camp, although he didn't participate in the actual escape. Seventy six men escaped that night. Seventy three were recaptured, and fifty of those gallant men were shot by the Gestapo. Only three made it to England and freedom. The book and the film are dedicated to the fifty.

Like the book, the film (1963) covers the planning, execution and aftermath of the escape. The creativity and ingenuity of the men in the camp is incredible. The cleverly hidden tunnel trap doors, not to mention the wire cutters, picks, air pumps for the tunnels, forged passes and identity cards, civilian clothing from uniforms, etc. all made from items scrounged around the camp, and stolen or traded from the Germans. Full of excitement, narrow squeaks and some of the best movie lines ever, you will not want to miss The Great Escape.

Plus, it's starring Steve McQueen (*squeal*), and you won't want to miss his amazing motorcycle ride!

Movie Review: Funny Face

I was planning on doing a review of Rebecca, one of my newly discovered favorite Alfred Hitchcock films, but I was having trouble coming up with words worthy to describe it. I'll continue to work on it and maybe someday it'll see the light of day. Maybe. I'm not promising anything, though... ;)

Instead, allow me to introduce you to one of my favorite musicals of all time...

Funny Face!

Fred Astaire...Audrey Hepburn...singing...dancing...beautiful clothes...Paris - what's not to like?

Jo Stockton (Audrey Hepburn) works at a quiet, small, hole-in-the-wall bookstore in Greenwich Village, NYC...at least, it was quiet until Maggie Prescott (Kay Thompson), editor of Quality fashion magazine, Dick Avery (Fred Astaire), her photographer, and a bevvy of pink clad helpers arrive to take pictures for the magazine. In a whirlwind of events, Jo finds herself on the way to Paris to model a new clothing line for Quality. In the midst of many fun singing and dancing numbers, she'll see the sights and have a few adventures... and maybe even fall in love.

The incomparable Audrey Hepburn was already fabulous enough, but singing and dancing?!

Last Saturday, we went to see Sherwood Pictures' latest movie, Courageous.

All I can say is, it was AMAZING!

In all seriousness, "I laughed. I cried. It moved me Bob."

I highly recommend it.

It was so refreshing to sit down, watch an immensely entertaining, funny and intense film, and not have to worry about bad language or other bad stuff.

Keep up the good work, Sherwood Pictures! I can't wait to see what you come up with next! =)

I'm trying a new vintage inspired hairstyle today. Pin curls in the front with the back hair in a bun. I think this is going to be one of my new favorite styles. Super simple. Maybe I'll get pictures at some point.

I need to buy more bobby pins. Where do they all disappear to, anyway?

(Anne Shirley, Mr. Knightley) I believe it would make much more sense for Anne to swear fealty to Mr. Knightley. I just can't see Mr. Knightley doing that for Anne. It's far to romantic for him.

5. For some reason, 5 is looking for a roommate. Should (s)he share a studio apartment with 9 or 10?
(Arthur Clennam, Edmund, Elnora) Uh, Arthur would definitely have Edmund as a roommate.

6. 2, 7, and 12 have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?
(Anne, Knightley, Nancy Drew) They all go to the Olive Garden where Nancy proceeds to discuss her latest case, while Anne begins to recite poetry. Mr. Knightley listens politely while eating his spaghetti and meatballs solemnly.

7. 3 challenges 10 to a duel. What happens?
(Elizabeth Bennet, Elnora) Elizabeth mortally wounds Elnora before realizing that they have no reason to be dueling in the first place. She is then carted off to jail to spend the rest of her life behind bars. The end.

8. If 1 stole 8's most precious possession, how would she/he get it back?
(Jo, Ivanhoe) These two should have had the previous question. ;) Ivanhoe would politely request that Josephine return his precious possession (his bronzed baby shoes). Jo attacks him with a poker. Ivanhoe, loath to fight with a lady, manfully takes the beating while devising means by which he might reclaim his shoes. He retreats, only to return with Rowena, who grapples with Jo while Ivanhoe makes off with his shoes. I think he grabbed Rowena on the way out, too, but that part of the story isn't very clear...

(Mr. Thornton, Nancy Drew) The Mystery at the Mill. How original.

(Sir Percy, Jo) Sir Percy takes it upon himself to teach Jo the fine art of fencing and disguise, then they go rescue some aristocrats...or something.

11. If 7 visited you for the weekend, how would you get along?
(Mr. Thornton) We would get along simply splendidly, I have no doubt. Go for long walks and rides through the countryside and discuss books we've read. In fact, we'd get along so well, that before he left I'd say, "Oh, John! Forget Margaret. Forget the mill. And especially forget your charming mother. I'm the one you've been waiting for all your life!" And he'd say, "You're absolutely right, darling! Let's get married." We'd elope and go to Scotland for our honeymoon and live happily ever after. Movie Review: Random Harvest

Shell-shocked.

He can't remember who he is or where he comes from and his shattered nerves make it difficult for him to speak.

They call him Smith.

1942

Our story begins at the end of WWI at the Melbridge County Asylum in England, the military wing. On an especially foggy evening, when the guard's backs are turned, Smith (Ronald Coleman) makes his escape and wanders about the town of Melbridge. Confused and disoriented he is found by Paula (Greer Garson), a dancer/singer with a traveling troupe of performers. Paula feels sorry for Smith, whom she calls Smithy, and decides to help him recover. They travel to the country where Smithy soon regains his confidence and his speech. And they fall in love. But what will happen when Smithy disappears? Will Paula ever find out what happened to her husband?

I love this movie. My mom loves this movie. My brother loves this movie.

It's beautiful and romantic, yet suspenseful and mysterious.

Greer Garson is stunningly beautiful as Paula and Ronald Coleman is superb in his role as Smithy. And he has an awesome accent. =)

Definitely a film that we need to add to our personal library.

And here's several LUX Radio Theater versions, if that's your cup of tea.

This morning's devotion in Morning and Evening (by Charles H. Spurgeon) seemed written just for me.

Here's a short excerpt...

"If thou be a child of God, thou wilt seek thy Father's face, and live in thy Father's love. Pray that this year thou mayst be holy, humble, zealous, and patient; have closer communion with Christ, and enter oftener into the banqueting-house of His love. It tied in so perfectly to my goal for this year! Don't you just love it when that happens?

Happy 2012, everyone!

a fresh start - a blank slate - a new year

I pray that this year will be a wonderful and blessed one for you all!

My brother and I waited up for the new year together (my mom and dad decided they'd just rather get some sleep;), and then watched "Laura" a 1940's detective/murder mystery classic starring Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews. Very suspenseful. Right up our alley. Didn't get to bed until 2:00 PM. =)

I only have one goal for this year: growing closer to my Saviour, Jesus Christ.

I haven't give Him the time He deserves the past few years. Frankly, it's been like riding on an out-of-control roller coaster here at times, what with my mom being ill with Lyme disease. Sometimes, I just need to stop and read my Bible. I talk to Him a lot throughout the day, but I haven't spent much time diving deep into His Word. I plan to change that this year, by His grace and through His strength.

As far as the rest goes, I'm just going to wait and see what happens. I need to practice that anyway - waiting.

However...I would very much like to visit my cousins on the east coast this year. I haven't seen them in over a year - almost two years, now! Far too long. I'm praying that the Lord will work that out somehow. He can:)

The New Year's Movie Meme

1. What is your all-time favorite Grace Kelly costume? Confession: I can't stand Grace Kelly. *ducks* That said, I adore her outfits in High Society. So lovely! *swoon*

2. What classic film would you nominate for a remake? I can't stand it when they remake classic films! So, none.

3. Name your favorite femme fatale. I guess Barbara Bain (Cinnamon) from Mission Impossible (the 60's TV series). That's the only one I can think of.

4. Name the best movie with the word "heaven" in its title. I can't recall watching any films with "heaven" in the title.

5. Describe the worst performance by a child actor that you’ve ever seen. Hmm...I know there is one, but I just can't think of it at the moment...how tragical. I'll probably remember right after I hit publish. ;)

6. Who gets your vote for most tragic movie monster? Does The Phantom count as a monster? If not, King Kong. I always feel bad for him at the end.

7. What is the one Western that you would recommend to anybody? Confession: I LOVE westerns. *grin* Probably Dodge City. The Magnificent Seven (Steve McQueen!!) is awesome, but I can't recommend it to everyone.

of Shopping and Surprises

After Christmas sales are so {perfect}.

You've got a bit of Christmas money to spend and everything is on sale!

What a sublimely superb combination!

Anyway, Kellie and I decided that we simply had to go shopping together.

So, we did.

And we took Kellie's sister Ellen along, too.

Also, I convinced my brother to chauffeur us. He's an awesome brother. :)

We did not coordinate our outfits on purpose - it just happened. So fun:)

We had a blast, going to the fabric store, Goodwill, an awesome hole-in-the-wall bookstore, Fred Meyer's, and the mall. I got a super cute black and white polka dot dress for $2 at the thrift store. Super cute. It needs a red belt. I also found plum colored tights and a grey suede bow headband at Fred's. The tights and the headband I have been searching for for a while.

We thought this knit hat was very snarky. ;)

Snarky was our word for the day...it is also an inside joke which would take too long to explain here.

You'll just have to wonder and suffer.

We had to take three pictures of the snarky hat.

End of snarky-ness.

When we were done shopping, we headed to the A's house for a surprise visit.

After purchasing chocolate donuts and party blower things.

While listening to the Mission Impossible theme.

Some situations require a theme song.

Upon arriving, we discovered from Mr. and Mrs. A that Christopher and Matthew were not home, but they would be in about 5 minutes.

Oh boy! This was the icing on the cake.

Time for an Impromptu Surprise Party for No Reason!!!

Alex quickly hid the car behind the barn and then we all hid and waited...

SURPRISE!!!!!

We ate our donuts and then played a few rounds of In a Pickle.

Yes, my bro can and does make weird faces. Talent.

Then boys practiced their violin, piano, guitar version of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme.

A little too much party, perhaps...?

And then it was time to head for home.

Aside from the car alarm going off at the gas station, the trip home was fairly uneventful...=D

After our movie was over, we played In a Pickle.

If all games must have a point and must make sense at all times, then this is not the game for you.

Tradition dictates that the Falconers must come over on Christmas Eve, so...they did.

We got a wee bit of snow the other day. About an inch...rather pathetic for this time of year in North Idaho. I can't say that I mind though. :)

My bro and I went shopping for my dad today. My dad doesn't read my blog (that I know of;), so I can tell you what we got him - a new wallet (Kohls), Kit-Kats, a plastic tube full of M&Ms with a plastic M&M Santa on top, a teddy bear shaped chocolate (about 5" tall), and a Hot Wheels car. We enjoy joke presents in my family. Like, wrapping a small present inside a huge box. I guess you could sum it up by saying that we like to have fun. :)

On our way home from town, we stopped by Matthew (aka Ani) and Christopher's house for a surprise visit. We brought donuts. They let us in. ;)

Being a shepherdess myself, it always makes me feel extra special to know that shepherds were the first to hear the glorious news of our Lord's birth.

Cutting Down the Christmas Tree

For the past few years we've cut down our Christmas trees from the same spot on our property.

The trees are just the perfect size, so there's a wide variety to choose from.

My whole family enjoyed this film. It's suspenseful and full of emotion with stellar performances by Henry Fonda and Vera Miles as Mr. and Mrs. Balestrero. If you enjoy suspense films, you'll like "The Wrong Man".

A Winter Walk

I'm just about to venture out into the cold to feed the animals.

Lovin' the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack. Do yourself a favor, and listen to it. You'll thank me.

I don't necessarily recommend the films themselves...except Captain Jack Sparrow is probably the funniest, craziest, smartest, weirdest character in film ever and I love him.

We got our Christmas tree today! It's so much fun decorating and listening to Christmas music, pausing to reminisce about Christmas' past. My mom was able to help put ornaments on this year, which she couldn't do last year. It was wonderful:)

For those who don't know, my mom has Lyme disease and has been in a wheelchair, unable to walk or do much of anything for herself, for about a year and a half. Through different treatments and supplements the Lord has been healing her and she's starting to walk again now!

Do y'all like my winter blog banner? I rather like it:)

I'm finally starting to feel somewhat normal again after being sick with...whatever it was I had last week. Still have a cough and a stuffy nose, but I'm on the mend. :)

My brother very graciously shared his cold/flu with me (my mum did teach us to share), so I've been sick in bed for the last few days. However, being sick in bed has it's compensations. In between taking naps, blowing my nose and taking nasty concoctions and pills supplied by my dad, I've been watching comfort movies.

Comfort movies are those special films that I've watched ever since I can remember - The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Swiss Family Robinson, Herbie, The Three Lives of Thomasina, and Mary Poppins.

I just had to share this delightful musical number with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke with you...enjoy:)

And now I'm going to go crawl back into my cave and blow my nose some more...

That said, I do wish it had held off until I brought my ewes home. Getting up our friend's driveway with a horse trailer is no picnic. He's had experience though, and is an expert with his truck and chains so we'll make it work.

I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving at my grandparent's house=)

And then...Christmas! I can't wait to pull out the Christmas music and movies and cut down a tree.

I had to take a break from crocheting. My fingers were so tired, sore and stiff after my last binge. They're fine now, so I guess I'll start working on Christmas presents.

I had the beginnings of an ear infection, but my dad is doctoring me up with all sorts of vile concoctions and vitamin pills. ;) I'm starting to feel better now, thanks to him.

While I was doing the barn chores this evening, I started thinking about the family of Christ. How there's a bond between believers. On the internet, you meet a lot of people you didn't know existed. You may never meet them in real life. But when you're both believers, it's like you know them. There's a bond. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. You pray for each other and feel God's presence. The brotherly love practically coming through the screen. It's so very special.

I can't even begin to tell you all that is in my heart, but I want to say thank you to all of my sisters in Christ, those I know in real life and those whom I've never met, for your encouraging words, your love, your prayers and your faith. You have no idea what a blessing you all are.

Fall Fashion Challenge {Day Six}

Howdy folks! It's {Day Six} of the Fall Fashion Challenge.

Today's challenge is "favorite fall trends".
I don't follow fashion trends normally, but some of this years trends are so me!

I did a bit of a combo on this one - plaid and western.

It's my default setting anyway;)

I wasn't going anywhere today, so I kept it very simple.

I saw a picture on Pinterest of a shirt that had buttons up the back like this. It looked like a good way to fix a shirt that was too big, so I tried it. And it worked wonderfully.

I was planning on posting something on this date and after clicking around the internet this morning I see that I am not alone in this. Very fun:)

In honor of 11/11/11 here are eleven things...

1. It looks like we're going to get our first somewhat official snow tonight. =)

2. I love the snow, but I wouldn't mind if it held off until we bring my ewes home from visiting Earl the ram. Their driveway is not fun when there's snow on the ground, especially if you're pulling a horse trailer. But we'll make it work if we have to.

3. Tomorrow is the Fall Folk Festival in Spokane. Music, music, music... And to make it even more fun, we're kidnapping Kellie and bringing her, too! We're planning on wearing our matching grey sweaters:)

4. The bands I'm looking forward to hearing are The North Idaho Hat Band (my brother's band), and The Portatos.

5. Chip from Chipmunk's Corner plays her accordion with The Portatos. Kellie, who is an excellent accordionist herself, has been wanting to meet her for a long time. And now she's going to. :)

6. A warm mug of hot chocolate on a frosty morning is heavenly.

7. Something the Lord has been reminding me of lately is how much He loves me. The fact that He loves me still blows my mind whenever I think about it. He loves me. Wow.

8. I've been figuring out what to get my family for Christmas. My dad is so hard to buy for. Anybody else have trouble buying for their dad? Alex is easy - a Cabelas gift card will do nicely. I think I'm going to buy Ben-Hur (with Charlton Heston) for my mom. She loves that movie. Me too, but that's beside the point...;) I know what I'm going to get my cousins, but I can't tell you because Abbie and Sarah Jo read this blog.

9. I'm trying in vain to think of something I can make for Kellie's little sisters. I always give them "Tasha-made-its". A Tasha-made-it is something I've crocheted and sometimes something I've sewn. Last year they all got hooded scarves. I'll think of something...

10. Psst - 50 followers could possibly bring on a giveaway. Just sayin'...

11. I've got to come up with an outfit for today's Fall Fashion Challenge. The theme is "your favorite 2011 fall trend".

Fall Fashion Challenge {Day Five}

Hello everyone! I hope you're all having a lovely day today!

The day got away from me yesterday and I didn't get pictures of my day four outfit. I really wanted to do day four because the theme was "your favorite era". My favorite era fashion wise is the 40s and 50s. From the outfits I saw, it's a lot of you girls favorite, too:)

Anyway, it is now {Day Five} of the Fall Fashion Challenge and the challenge for today is...Polka Dots!

I love polka dots. That being so, it's rather shocking that I only have one item in my closet with polka dots!

Very shocking indeed.

My brother's horse Dewey kindly consented to pose with me.

I saw kindly because he isn't very fond of me.

I have no idea why, except that he's a one person horse and adores my brother.

But he does enjoying posing for the camera;)

My own horse, Bob, was far too dirty to take pictures with.

One of the problems a white horse has this time of year.

Please pardon my headless state - the sun was shinning right in my eyes and my smile looked more like a grimace of pain. That and my eyes were closed;)

{Day Three} of the Fall Fashion Challenge.

Today's challenge is...bold tights!

First off, I don't wear bright colored socks or tights.

I just never have...except for the ones with candy canes on them that I wore when I was a little kid.

Colored tights look really fun, so I may have to change my ways.

But today the most exciting thing I could find in my sock draw, were some navy blue, lace-y-ish knee highs.

They'll have to do.

And here are my "bold" tights. haha!

It was spitting snow a wee bit ago. Not much, but hey, it's white;)

I've been enjoying talking to my extra "little bro" Matthew (aka Peppy, aka Ani) on Google Chat lately. And I mean actual conversations, not just insulting each other back and forth...although we did that, too. I've known him since he was 4-years-old and I used to give him piggyback rides. As he is now 6'1" and still climbing, those days are long gone. He might kill me for saying this on my blog, but I'll risk it. ;)

Listening to soundtracks from Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and some movies I'm not familiar with on Pandora. Soundtracks are so cool, especially when you're in a thinking, listening mood.

As I discover new favorite classic film actresses and actors, I clean the library out on movies starring them. Last week it was Maureen O'Hara. I'd only ever seen her in The Parent Trap with Hayley Mills, but now I've seen The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Black Swan, How Green Was My Valley, and a few others. Simply gorgeous lady!

I always love seeing the outfits worn by the other young ladies, and I can't wait to see their fall ensembles!

We had our first snow last night and this morning, but it didn't stick so it's not really official, at least in my opinion. I'm kind of glad it didn't stick, although I do love snow. Not quite ready to be snowed in yet.

I've been feverishly working on new items for the shop. My Google chat status pretty much says it all...

It's pouring rain outside right now.

I was just out there feeding the animals and spent a considerable amount of time stumbling around the upper pasture trying to locate our three llamas and my pet sheep Calvin.
In the dark.

Stumbling because of course I didn't have a flashlight. Why would I need a flashlight when it's dark?

I mean, really?

Ok, so I'm not very bright...no pun intended;)

I also didn't utualize the hood so conveniently attached to my jacket so I am rather wet, to put it mildly.

And I gave up on trying to find the llamas and Calvin. If they want to stay out in the pasture when it's raining, they can. A bit of dampness won't hurt them and there are trees for shelter.

The rest of my flock of sheep are at a friend's house visiting his ram for a month. Sometime around April we'll have a new crop of lambs bouncing about. I can't wait:)

Alex and I had a lovely evening at a friend's Inspirational Harvest Party this evening. Taco salad (oh, yum), good fellowship, wonderful singing, and a short "sermon" by one of the dads. At least, I assume it was short - we had to leave early cause my dad wanted us home by 9:00. Bummer.

But, I had the opportunity to wear my new coat for the first time...

My mom bought me this vintage trench coat on Etsy. It's purple-ish/pink-ish. I LOVE it =D

The wonderful Christian lady who owns the shop sent such a lovely note along with it.

She lifted me up and encouraged me.

Isn't it wonderful how we're connected to other believers through Christ, even if we've never met them?

It's awesome.

I just watched "Secretariat" again. Absolutely beautiful movie.

There's nothing more appropriate on a chilly autumn day than a hot bowl of soup. I've been going crazy making soup lately - potato, rice & mushroom, onion, and I'm going to try beet soup tomorrow night. With sour cream. It doesn't get any better than that.

A Night to Remember

I first heard about "A Night to Remember" when I was leafing through the new Vision Forum catalog. A classic film about the sinking of the Titanic?! That sounded like a movie I just had to see...

A few clicks later and I had requested it from the library and last night I watched it.

And it surpassed all of my expectations.

Based on the book of the same name by Walter Lord, "A Night to Remember" is the true story of the Titanic. The acting was wonderful, the sets and costumes were superb. I cried. Oh, how I cried. I don't normally actually cry while watching a movie, but I cried. I was inspired by the courage and selflessness of the men and women on board. Men helping the women and children enter the lifeboats, and then stepping back and waiting. Wives who refused to board the lifeboats and be parted from their husbands. Mothers who bravely boarded the lifeboats with their children, waving good-bye to the men they would never see again in this world. The band playing "Nearer, My God, to Thee" as the ship was swallowed up by the icy water.

It was a beautiful movie.

What more can I say? I highly recommend this film! You will not be sorry you watched it.

New in the shop...

For the last few days and nights - I'm a night owl and stay up indecently late - I've been busily working on new items for the shop...and watching the appropriate amount of movies.

Crocheting and movies - it's how I roll.

Though these are not colors I would usually work with, I love the way the gray, mustard yellow and powder blue look together!

Mixing and matching colors is one of my greatest delights.

Here's the custom sleeve I was working on. I think it turned out really well.

As I was packaging up the custom sleeve today, I had an idea.

Custom stickers.

It would be awesome to have my very own Wool & What-not stickers!

I've been looking around for an Etsy shop that sells custom stickers and found several that look good.

Anyone bought custom stickers from Etsy before? Any shops that you recommend?

Wow, I'm typing my first official post on my new blog!

Well, first off, welcome to my blog, Day by Day!

My name is Natasha Marie, and I am a 22-year-old, formerly homeschooled, older daughter living at home with my wonderful family in beautiful North Idaho.

For the past few years I've been blogging at PlexPedia.com.
I loved blogging at PlexPedia. It's easy to use and fun. But it just doesn't get the same amount of traffic as Blogger. My old blog was mainly just about me and my life. {You can read most of my old posts which I have relocated to this blog.} While I will still blog about those things, I want to give more attention to promoting my Etsy shop, Wool & What-not. Which is why I decided to move to Blogger.

I take pleasure in many things, but at the top of the list are studying God's Word and His amazing creation, riding my horse Bob, hiking with my dog Bonnie, raising sheep, reading, history (especially Scottish history), sewing, crocheting, playing the piano and mandolin, singing, babies, laughing, wearing skirts, long hair, watching classic films, dancing, historical costumes, homemaking, home education, vintage clothing, millinery, messing around in my garden, cleaning, photography, spending time with my family & friends, and web & graphic design.

It is my earnest desire to serve the Lord in all that I do and say, do His will, and by His grace be a godly woman.

It looks just like any other country driveway - narrow, gray gravel - but just around the corner and beyond the gate, is a piece of heaven on earth...

A quaint, brick-lined gravel path...

Swinging gently in the shade under the grape vines, the glider is the perfect place for an afternoon snooze...you can take my word for that;) I can't count the number of times I've whiled away a summer afternoon on that glider...

The grape vines climb up and over the trellis (constructed by my Grandpa)m which covers the patio with leafy shade all summer long.

Their vegetable garden is the most beautiful and prolific I've ever seen - there's nothing like fresh veggies from the garden!

I'm going to have a garden just like theirs someday...

my love affair with vintage books

I don't usually make impulsive decisions.

I like to think things through and then, and only then, make a logical (and, ahem, economical) decision.

But...some things are just too hard to resist.

Especially vintage books.

They're my one weakness.

I just now splurged and bought two lots of vintage Nancy Drew books on Etsy.

Oh Etsy! How you do tempt me! How I love you! How I hate you!

Ahem, moving on...

They are beautiful, are they not?

Lavender covers...mmhmm. Yes, please.

There are two mysteries in each volume and I bought six volumes.

My mom said go for it...

So I did.

What else could I do? I always do what my mommy says.

There's a chipmunk on my hood!

I'm driving down the road, headed into town for a day of shopping and an eye doctor appointment.

Singing along with the Andrews Sisters, a sudden movement under the hood of my car catches my eye. As I stare (with eyes bugging out and mouth hanging open, no doubt) a chipmunk's head appears and suddenly I find myself in a most astonishing predicament.

I'm driving down the road with a chipmunk on my car hood!

A very confused and frightened chipmunk with fur whipping in the wind.

As soon as I possibly could, I pulled over to the side of the road.

Chipmunk and girl stared at each other through the glass.

In approximately two seconds, I decided three things...

This is a highly unusual situation.
A chipmunk capering about in front of the windshield is a major distraction.
I had to get him off my car.

Just how I was going to do that, I wasn't sure. I opened my door...and he immediately popped back under the hood. Ok, shooing him off was apparently not going to work. Time for a phone call.

"Alex, this is Tasha. I have a chipmunk on the hood of my car."

*silence*

"Really?"

"Yes, really! I don't know how he got there, but I tried to shoo him off and he went back under the hood...and he won't come out! What should I do?!"

*Alex asks dad what I should do*

"Dad says to just keep going."

"Uh...it's kind of distracting having this chipmunk on my hood."

"Hmm...okay, we'll come and help you out."

After telling him where I was and hanging up, I went back to watching the chipmunk, who was once again on my hood.

Then I called Kellie to tell her I had a chipmunk on my hood. It was just too good to keep to myself;)

Right after I hung up, the chipmunk decided it was time to abandon ship, so he jumped off the side of the car and into the bushes.

Whew! Thank you for fixing that problem, Lord!

After calling home to tell the boys that I did not require their assistance any more, I made my merry way into town.

The tragedy of it all, is that I had no camera with me, so I have no proof that this actually happened.

Ouch.

You'll just have to trust me.

WHAT IS HAPPENING...well, today I need to let the horses out to pasture {check}, clean the horse corral {check}, spread fertilizer in the small sheep pasture, move the sheep from the horse pasture to the orchard {check}, get some laundry done, and the list goes on. I'm also planning a trip the library {check}.

Besides chores, I was watching If You Could Only Cook (Jean Arthur) with my mom. It's a screwball comedy. Love it, although My Sister Eileen (Rosalind Russel) is by far the best screwball comedy I've seen to date...Easy Living (Jean Arthur) is good, too...and so is His Girl Friday (Cary Grant & Rosalind Russel). ;)

HOW I'M DOING...very well, thank you. And yourself?

I FEEL...pretty good. I'd feel better if the sun was shining...especially as I wanted to ride Bob today.

I THINK...that I am incredibly blessed in every way beyond measure.

I'M CURIOUS...what my cousin Abbie's boyfriend looks like.

I'M PRAYING...that my mom will continue to get better.

I'M THINKING...that I'd better starting working on learning German again if I want to catch up with Mandy and Kellie;)

WHEN I WAS LITTLE...I played with my toy horses (Breyer and Grand Champion) and my dollhouse all the time. That was before I had a real horse of my own. But they were real to me.

I WANT TO GO...to Scotland! And to North Carolina to visit my cousins=)

I LOVE...Jesus, my family, my cousins, my friends, my dog, my horses, my sheep, my cats, North Idaho, the color purple, books, denim skirts, crocheting, sewing, computers, Spring, movies...

I DESPISE...greed.

Oh, what a beautiful day!

Memorial Day was a beautiful, sunny, warm day. A rare treat these days when all we've had for weeks is rain, rain, and more rain!

But that just makes the sunny days all the more special, now doesn't it?

With the weather behaving so nicely, it seemed a shame to stay indoors, so Alex and I decided to go for a hike at Farragut State Park. It's just around the corner from our house, and we go there quite often during the summer. (Note: city corners and country corners are as different as night and day;)

During WWII, Farragut was the 2nd largest Naval training base in the world. It was established as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

I know what you're thinking - a Naval training base...in Idaho?!

Well, who'd have thunk to look here? ;)

Although the base is now a state park, Lake Pend Oreille is still used by the Navy's Acoustic Research Detachment for testing large-scale submarine prototypes. The lake is the 5th deepest lake in the US, being 1,150 ft. deep in some areas.

Cool, huh?

There are still remnants of the base scattered about the park, like the stone chimney Alex is standing next to...
